Understanding Entropy in Health Sciences

    This week's module covered an important topic when it comes to healthcare and medicine: Entropy. When we look at the way the system of medicine works, it is clear that there is a need for a deeper understanding of this concept. So what is entropy? According to the Dictionary, there are many different ways to define this unique term, but for the sake of health science, we are going with this definition: "the amount of disorder or the degree of randomness of a system" (Farlex, 2022).

    After going through the material in this week's module, we were also assigned to research how entropy is applied to our future careers. Following this, we looked into how to construct a video on Adobe Express. I enjoyed learning how to get creative and use the video editing tools provided by Adobe to create my own piece of work. For my video, I focused on the nutritional aspect of health sciences, as I am looking to become a future dietician / nutrition coach. After reading up on entropy in terms of health, I was fascinated by how the foods we eat can increase the randomness of energy in our bodies, resulting in more inflammation (if consuming unhealthy items i.e. fast food).



We also looked into how the "S-curve" works and I applied it to my knowledge of health sciences. Essentially, there are different phases of this curve that demonstrate different actions that health care providers might take. For example, during the Covid pandemic, there were periods of time when hospitals were overwhelmed, they needed to try something new to keep up with the high demands of sick patients. They reached a breakpoint and then had to level up in order to meet these needs. This S-curve to the right shows how these shifts take place and can benefit the health world.



As always, I loved the portion of this module where I got to use my creative skills and make something of my own using Adobe Express. This week I used the video editing tools to form my own educational video on entropy as it pertains to my future occupation/ field of study. I like that I could add my voiceover to each slide while keeping it short and sweet. This is definitely a tool that will come in handy for me again! Here is the video I created:


    In conclusion, I enjoyed going through this week's module in Technology for Leading and Learning. I found the information in this module of the course to be fascinating and helps me looks at other areas of study, such as marketing and education, through a different lens. I think the concept of entropy is very important and understanding its application to the health sciences can be beneficial for the future of modern medicine. I also found the Adobe Express editing tool for videos to be fun to work with and plan on using them on future projects.

    Hi, Darian! I really love the visuals you used throughout your blog; they are so colorful and inviting! I liked reading about how entropy applies to your field of study. I also liked that you reflected on the process of creating your Adobe Express video. Yours came out so nice! I like the use of visuals and music to accompany the voiceover.
